The sandpaper numbers are a classical Montessori material from the math section.

The child tracks the shape of the numbers with his fingers thus creating muscle memory and training the child's hand for the writing process.

Normally numbered figures are the first Montessori material in the mathematics section to present to a child of 3 to 6 years. They are designed for daily exercise with the child.

The extraordinary feature of this training material is that it focuses the attention on the numbers while at the same time being interesting and appealing to the child (he/she wants to touch and handle them). After modelling from an adult, the child then traces the number and names it. This means that for every number the child will use several senses - sight, hearing and touch.
