The double-sided Arabic Sandpaper letters are iconic in the Montessori classroom and a child's first steps towards literacy. This is typically one of the first materials a child is presented with in the language area.

They are one of the first steps for the child to learn the Arabic letters. The child recognizes the shape of the letter by moving his small fingers on the sandpaper letters with different and safe texture for your child’s use. The child recognizes the shape of the letter with his different senses, and it makes it easier for him to write the letters later.  

The child uses their fingers to trace the shape of the letter thus creating muscle memory and training the small hand for the process of writing.  Using more than one sense in learning makes the information more stable and more fun for the child. At this stage, the child may learn to read and the sounds of the letters and recognize them before he starts to master holding the pen and writing with it.
